A typical golf course will have an array of different equipment required to maintain the grounds. The place to start is the maintenance shed. There is generally a mechanic who reports to the green keeper; who usually then reports to the General Manager. |
In the maintenance shed will be tractors, gang mowers, greens mowers, rotary mowers, two-cycle weed eaters, golf carts, pickup trucks and air compressors. Due to the amount of fuel used, a gasoline storage tank and possibly a diesel storage tank will be present.
This equipment is exposed to the most trying conditions imaginable. The equipment works in damp, wet environments, in variations of temperature. Even though the equipment is numerous, many of the pieces have a lot in common.
All of the equipment used for mowing grass or maintaining sand traps have grease points that are subjected to water, dirt, impact and heat. The ideal grease will not pound out or wash out and will seal out dirt and moisture. Grease will kill grass on the fairways and Greens. Replacing the grass is a very expensive operation, but more important it is very discerning to the golfer who has just paid good money to play a round of golf.
LE's 3752 ALMAGARD or 1275 ALMAPLEX are excellent recommendations for these grease applications. In addition, 4025 QUINPLEX Food Machinery Lubricant is preferred by some maintenance crews, since it is a white grease.
Nearly all of the engines, whether in trucks, tractors or mowers, are worked to the point of overheating. They are frequently left idling. Our 8800 MONOLEC® ULTRA Engine Oil will keep the engines running cooler while preventing wear.
A number of small gearboxes are found on various pieces of equipment that are subjected to these difficult conditions. These gearboxes are also subjected to internal condensation when they cool off, which means water in the gearbox. The ideal gear oil will lower gearbox temperature during operation, protect during start-up and storage, and permit water to drain off while still retaining its original characteristics. Our 1600 Series DUOLEC™ Vari-Purpose Gear Lubricants are excellent recommendations. Their cohesive and adhesive traits allow the gears to be continuously protected with a film of oil. The water separation characteristics allow the water to be drained while keeping the oil in operation. The bush hog mower typically uses a gear oil in the drive gears on top of the mower.
Hydraulics are a large part of the equipment. They are constantly suffering hose and seal leaks that can ruin the fairways and greens. Hydraulic pumps are replaced on a regular basis. The ideal hydraulic oil will soften the rubber in the hoses and seals, not foam and provide the lubricity necessary for a smooth operating hydraulic pump. Our MONOLEC Hydraulic Oils, MULTILEC® or possibly LOW TOX® Hydraulic Oils are the answer.
Hydrostatic transmissions will work better with our 7500 MONOLEC Power Fluid. Also try our 2300 L-X Heavy-Duty Chemical Supplement which is fuel additive for gasoline engines. For the diesel storage tank, LE's 2410/2420 BTU+ Diesel Fuel Improvers will separate the water. This separation will keep algae from growing and injector tips will not be eroded nor "blown off". The lubrication provided by BTU+ will allow fuel pumps to last much longer without wearing out.
The golf carts and mowers are constantly being washed making 2100 NUTRIGENT an excellent industrial cleaner. 2100 NUTRIGENT is also used in "ball washers" to clean the golf balls but also to prevent the water from creating a bad smell.
Due to the extreme amount of contamination and corrosion from chemicals and fertilizers, many parts freeze making it very difficult to replace them. LE's 2059 MONOLEX Penetrating Oil & Lubricant is a superior penetrating oil.
