Food Grade Lubricants

LE’s food grade oils and greases play a key part in reducing maintenance and operating costs for food and beverage facilities. Our high-performance H1 and H2 products include solutions for heat, cold, moisture, rust and oxidation (R & O), and wear. LE has a food machinery lubricant solution for the majority of applications and operating conditions.

Lubricants that are NSF H1 certified have been cleared for use in USDA-inspected food processing plants and can be used where incidental food contact may occur. All LE H1 lubricants – except for H1 Machine Oil – are also certified Kosher Pareve by the Orthodox Union. H2 lubricants meet USDA H2 criteria for non-food contact areas of food processing plants.

Gasoline engine oils

LE’s Pyroshield® line of heavy-duty open gear lubricants are designed to protect the valuable open gears of ball mills, rod mills or breaker mills. Pyroshield is the open gear lubricant solution for extending the life of these gears, lowering lubricant consumption, and reducing overall maintenance costs.

Pyroshield meets or exceeds all relevant manufacturer specifications for open gears and is used in a variety of open gears all over the world, including in cement mills and kilns, metal and mineral mining operations, and coal power generation facilities.

Pyroshield’s ability to protect open gears from extreme pressures, heavy loads and high temperatures is unparalleled. It appears translucent during use, meaning that open gears can be visually inspected with the use of a strobe light. Due to its tackiness, Pyroshield clings tenaciously to the gear.

After years of proven performance with its Pyroshield lubricants, LE improved the formula even further by removing all heavy metals and lead. LE also increased the film strength of the lubricants, making them easier to pump through automatic lubrication systems, and raised the viscosity index of the lubricants, removing temperature-based fluctuations.

Apply manually or with automatic lubrication systems

Pyroshield can be applied manually or through automatic spray systems. When Pyroshield is used in an automatic lubrication system, it will not clog the lube system and there are no solids to block or abrade measuring valves. Pyroshield will not accumulate on nozzles, or clog and interfere with the spraying process.

Synthetic Lubricants

Non-synthetic lubricants aren’t always the right solution. In applications with extremely high or extremely low temperatures or very heavy loads, synthetic lubes may perform better than non-synthetic versions. For example, synthetic gear oil would provide exceptional protection in heavily loaded gearboxes exposed to temperature extremes. Another example is synthetic motor oil (or synthetic engine oil), which would provide better viscosity stability in extreme temperatures.

The performance benefits offered by synthetic lubes vary from product to product. They include high viscosity index, improved thermal stability, better oxidation resistance, improved low-temperature properties, lower evaporation losses, a lower tendency to form residues and reduced flammability.

LE offers synthetic lubricant options in several of its product categories. These synthetic oils and synthetic greases are available in a range of ISO, AGMA and SAE grades and are effective for many different types of applications.

Wire Rope Lubricants

Correct lubrication of wire ropes, chains and cables will safely increase their operational life. Applications such as cranes, drilling rigs, shovels, draglines and suspension bridges all use wire rope, chain or cable to perform work such as pulling or hoisting. Extreme environmental conditions are common, and the correct use of LE’s high-performance Wirelife® lubricants will provide safely extended life to wire ropes, chains and cables.

Wire ropes need protection from the inside out

Most wire ropes fail from the inside out. When selecting an effective wire rope lubricant, choose products that are free of acids and alkalis, possess the adhesive strength to stay on the rope, are able to penetrate between wires and strands, have high fluid film strength, resist oxidation and remain pliable.

Corroded rope can be a safety hazard, as there is no way to determine its remaining strength and life. Proper lubrication will help prevent wire rope deterioration due to rust and corrosion. LE has a range of penetrating and coating type wire rope lubricants to suit specific applications.

Penetrating lubricants

Penetrating lubricants contain a petroleum solvent that carries the lubricant into the core of the wire rope, then evaporates, leaving behind a heavy lubricating film to protect and lubricate each strand. A penetrating lubricant is critical as most wire rope fails from the inside out.

Coating lubricants

Coating lubricants penetrate slightly while sealing the outside of the wire rope from moisture, and reducing wearing and fretting corrosion. For a coating lubricant, it is best practice to first use a penetrating lubricant to saturate the core. After the penetrating product has dried, apply the coating lubricant to seal and protect the outside of the wire rope.

Environmentally friendly lubricants

LE has an environmentally friendly Wirelife® Low Tox® penetrating lubricant, which is important if the wire rope lubricant is used in aquatic or other environmentally sensitive areas. During relubrication, wash-off due to environmental exposure or lubricant degradation can cause the wire rope lubricant to enter the surrounding ecosystem. LE’s Low Tox lubricant is inherently biodegradable, which means the majority of the product biodegrades over time. It has up to a tenfold reduction in toxicity impact in comparison to traditional lubricants.

Oven Chain Lubricants

Process ovens in manufacturing plants are critical to production, but operating conditions such as high temperatures, 24/7 operation and heavy contamination make it difficult to ensure proper lubrication. LE has a range of superior high-performance lubricant formulations that assist customers worldwide with their process oven lubrication requirements.

Reduced downtime

Oven chains will operate freely and efficiently throughout the process if properly lubricated. Penetration of the pins and bushings is critical to prevent corrosion and provide sufficient lubrication.

Conversely, substandard lubrication leads downtime-inducing problems such as:

  • Premature wear to the pins and bushings, which shorten chain life and causes rapid stretching, a critical failure in machines where equipment or machinery synchronization is a chain function.
  • Links and strands becoming inflexible, causing rough operation, chains jumping off the sprockets and even breakage.

Reduced energy costs

Increased friction means more electrical energy is needed to operate the oven chain. Superior lubricants decrease friction, which reduces energy consumption and helps the lubricants eventually pay for themselves many times over.

Solid vs. liquid lubricant

There are two different ways to lubricate high-temperature chains: with a liquid lubricant or with a solid lubricant suspended in a carrier fluid. LE has both fluid and solid film lubricants, with recommendations made depending upon the specific needs of your application.

Fluid film lubrication is the regular oil film lubrication used in the majority of ambient temperature applications. It can also be used at higher temperatures, as long as the following are considered: the increased oxidation rate of the oil, the decreased viscosity of the fluid, and the volatility of the oil.

Solid film lubrication is preferred at high temperatures or in applications where it is impossible or undesirable to use a liquid. The solid lubricant is suspended in a liquid carrier designed to evaporate after the lubricant has been applied and, in the case of chains, after it has penetrated to the pin area of the chain. The result is a smooth, low-drag surface, which reduces friction, heat and wear, as well as electrical energy consumption.
